Get inspired, Mad Men style.

mad men

Wow Wow WOW... I am in a bit of a flap because Julia bobbin is hosting a Mad Men dress challenge and I guess, maybe, I might...be there with BELLS on! I hope you will join in too. All you need to do to take part is be inspired by Mad Men fashion. We've got until the end of March to make a dress! You might already have a favourite dress from the series? But if you can't choose just one, or like me you're generally just inspired by the wiggle silouette, you can make a dress that captures the essence of Mad Men too. It's that flexible!

I thought I'd try the Etsy supplies section for some Mad Men sewing patterns inspiration. This is a good place to look for a replica pattern for a dress from the series, if you've got one in mind. The search returned approx 31 pages of authentic Mad Men potential. It was very hard to be restrained here (my paypal spending is being closely monitored these days) and this is why....

How does one choose just one dress? It was like leaving puppies at the pound. The thinking woman's solution is to buy yourself some more procrastination time and get a few. I show great restraint here and got my mits on the first three. As far as narrowing down further and choosing fabric, I don't quite know where to start...

Inspired yet? Are you in? I hope so!

  1. I'm definitely in and I too am torn between 3 styles/patterns which I've blogged about. I'm loving your choices, can't wait to see what you settle on!

  2. I was given a whole pile of vintage burda style mags (in german) and lent them to a friend to look through. She got really excited and this is what she's done with them http://issuu.com/retropatternmags . I thought you might be interested....

    1. Your friend is really generous offering a complete pattern drafting in exchange only for a photo of the finished dress.

    2. oh yeah, she's totally generous. She just really wants to share the joy of these patterns. She's had heaps of views, but no one has asked her for one yet.... except me- I have the whole set!

    1. Well Rach, I've bought them, but as for whether I can make them. I'm not thinking too much about that yet. Sure you don't want to join?

  4. Ooooooh! I saw the first series of MadMen and HATED it! lol. I couldn't understand why everyone was raving about it when the man guy is a complete douche. BUT I did love the fashion, and the time it is set in. I think I remember a few maternity fashions in it? Time to start googling!

    1. I bet you can't wait to get started! Yes its a bit of an anxious wait, seeing when the pattern will turn up. Usually it takes 2-3 weeks for things to arrive here from overseas.

  6. Oh, hey, I made Simplicity 3722 (although I definitely modernized the fit a bit)! http://inderlovesfolkart.blogspot.com/2010/09/learning-curves-cont.html Many of my difficulties with it could be written off by saying I don't often sew for myself and I didn't make a muslin. It turned out really nicely though and I would definitely make it again!

    1. I just checked it out, looks real purty. Sounds like it gave you some grief though. I'm not sure what I'm in for using vintage patterns...

    2. Oh, I think most of my problems had to do with my very rusty fitting skills, rather than the pattern per se. I did have to lengthen the torso quite a lot and let the waist out. I think those are really common adjustments for vintage patterns if you plan to wear them without a girdle. The torso may have been so short on me because it's a half-sized (petite) pattern and while I am actually petite, my shortness is in my legs, not my torso. :-)

  7. I watch the show for the fashion. I am totally annoyed by Don Draper, but the fashion keeps me coming back. I can't wait to see what you come up with. I may participate in this if I can actually get my butt in gear and start sewing for myself!

  8. Yes Sascha get that butt into gear! Now I've started sewing for me, the kids sewing is taking a back seat. I reckon you should totally sew a Mad Men dress, perfect occasion to make your adult sewing debut!
