Australian fashion label Tigerlily are pretty much as 'Aussie' as backyard bbq's. They make beautiful, slightly exy swim-wear and clothing that I used to pine for seasonally, in my pre-diy era. I am blown away that a new fabric store in town (The Fabric Store) are stocking the exact Tigerlily fabrics from their collections...by the yard! This seems kind of unusual, but complain I did not. Grab the bolt, race to the counter, shoulder checking along the way, I did. I recognized this geometric polyester knit from a dress in their collection a few summers ago. A dress that I wanted bad enough to cut and paste it into a word document...these were the days before Pinterest.
So I may have mentioned in a recent Kniterviews, something to the tune of 'I don't change much at all when sewing with knits laa laa di da'. Which is all well and dandy until I tried to sew this really stretchy fabric with a regular straight stitch. No surprises, it puckered like a you know what! Usually I avoid my machine's stretch stitch function ( uneven stitches?) but in this case it was ten times better than straight stitch. I tried so hard to line up the print but it was ta-ricky. I'm declaring polyester knit as the eel of stretch fabrics, and after much wrestling I still couldn't get it to match at the center back and side seams. Lucky its a busy print and hides it well. So don't look too close you lot!
Now I have my own, friendlier on the budget, Tigerlily dress!
Oh wow - what a fantastic print, no wonder you wanted to get your hands on it! Your maxi dress turned out perfect, you look gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteHi Suzie, wow, thanks so much for your lovely comments
DeleteSuch a flattering pattern for you! This is realllly gorgeous. Tigerlily bikinis are so pretty, I didn't know they made dresses!
ReplyDeleteDid you get your hair cut too? I love it!
Thanks Max!! They do make some dresses but you are right, their bikinis are yummy. I did get it chopped off, I need low maintenance hair with boys!
DeleteWow - gorgeous dress. Your sewing creations just get better and better. You have such an eye for fabric. Loving these selections. Mrs B x
ReplyDeleteThankyou Mrs B xx

So glad you like it. I can't wait to make another.
DeleteSexy mama!!! I am gaga over the fabric! Even if the print doesn't quite match, it's still visually stunning.
ReplyDeleteHehe thank you! It does feel very sexy on, so it won't be one for taking the kids to the park.
DeleteOh man this looks SO GOOD!!! Love the pattern with this print and am getting especially jealous of your weather!
ReplyDeleteWow thankYOU Jen, that means a whole bunch coming from you.
DeleteSuuuuper pretty!
ReplyDeleteOoo thanks Natty, I love your sewing!
Deletethat is the most beautiful fabric and perfect for the pattern. beautiful job!
ReplyDeleteThankyou Anna :)
DeleteLove it! Makes me want to try a maxi dress... I've never worn one. I also have Word docs that I kept before Pinterest!
ReplyDeleteYou've got them too?! That is funny. Sascha, I live in my other version, its so comfy. I bet you'd love to wear it while kid wrangling!
DeleteFabulous Again! Wow you are a DIY fashion Guru! You fabric choice is fantastic... if I had seen that fabric on a role I would have probably thought oooo (and had a wee touch) then have been too scared to attempted anything! Must get more courageous with fabric purchases! Go Sophie :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Holly, it was a bit intimidating all that pressure of buying a really nice fabric that I didn't want to balls up.
DeleteDamn, girl! Is what I said when I saw this. This is exactly how a maxi dress ought to look, you rock this! You look, like, 8 feet tall and perfect. Love love love this, well done!

Haha thankyou Leah...when are you sewing yours?
DeleteI love your fabric! So jealous. Again like someone else said how do I get my hands on that fabric. I have made two of these and LOVE them. I think it is a universally flattering pattern. Question. How did you make the bottom of yours so swingy. Mine end up more straight. I was just thinking the other day I wonder how I make it look just like yours does!
ReplyDeleteI just checked out your version...LOVE the stripes and those colours together. It is so flattering on everyone. I see what you mean, I think it is meant to hang straight like your version but because this fabric was SO flimsy it did stretch while I was sewing it, and maybe that's giving it that swing?
DeleteThat is such a fabulous print!! WHY?!?! Is it so hard to find such fabulous prints?!? I hope you bought the whole bolt and are squirreling it away. This maxi looks so effortless and elegant. I love it!
ReplyDeleteThanks Sallie! I SHOULD have bought the whole bolt, you are right it is so hard to find good stretch.
DeleteAbsolutely stunning (and love the new hair)! The print is gorgeous and oh the pattern - I have wanted to get it so many times but keep refraining because I've been nervous about having to deal with that much knit yardage. Was the pattern difficult to cut out? Any tips for dealing with large pieces of knit?
ReplyDeleteAw shanks Kimberly! You should definitely get this pattern...I'll be keeping an eye out for your version ; I cut it out on the ground and just pinned the paper pattern to the fabric, so I think having a big surface helps. Or cutting it out on top of carpet because the fabric sticks to it a little.
DeleteI cut mine on the ground too. I think having a pattern in the fabric helps to line up the fabric. Its actually only two yards.
DeleteThank you both! And Clover thanks for the yardage. For whatever reason I assumed it was like 4.5 yards and having to wash and press that much fabric beforehand in addition to the pattern cutting makes me start to sweat. :)
DeleteHoly cow, Sophie, you are the hotness. I love this dress, it looks so comfortable and is incredibly flattering. Beautiful!!
ReplyDeleteHaha thanks Kristin, I'll take 'the hotness'!
Deleteso stinking awesome!
ReplyDeleteCheers Meg
DeleteGorgeous! Can I borrow?? hee hee xx
ReplyDeleteSure thing, only its so long on me you'd need someone to walk everywhere with you holding the train up!
Deletethis is AWESOME! so pretty and modern... love it.
ReplyDeleteThank you Erin
DeleteI am beyond jealous. Where do you live and how do you find such great fabrics? I am always disappointed in what I have available. It is a great pattern though. I made it in black last summer and wore it constantly.
ReplyDeleteKelli iis from The Fabric Store in Brisbane, Australia. There's also one in Melbourne and Sydney and they only stock fashion apparel fabrics, so you don't have to wade through any quilting stuff. Unfortunately they're not online so you might just have to pop over to Oz and visit them. You made one too? I imagine you would have got so much wear out of a black one, it'd be fun to accessories! You should post it, I'd love to see a more neutral maxi...
DeleteWow I love this dress and the fabric oh oh so much ! I wish i lived in a stated that had a "Fabric store" or that they would come online cos i would love to get my hands on some :D
ReplyDeleteYou've done such a lovely job with this dress i really want to try making one soon. Oh and you hair is super cute :)
Hi Lili. Thanks so much, it truly is a great pattern and you should definitely give it a go. Don't worry, I understand. Before The Fabric Store there was only spotlight and I have to say their selection left me wanting!
